I got inspired to write this entry from one of my pals, Mattalatt.
Music.
After reading his entry about music, I just found it trippy how music can be the root of everything. The root of friendship, knowledge, good times, etc. Through the years, I went through so much music. I remember, the first time I REALLY got into music was when I became friends with Mason in 6th grade. Then, I was introduced to SlipKnot. They were the sickest shit to me & they were all I listened to. I had folders after folders after folders on the computer filled with photos of them. We made masks like theirs for Halloween. I drew them, I read about them, I watched them on DVDs. I wore SlipKnot tees, I bought stickers of them from Hot Topic. I admired them for what they did. From being freaks on the cover of magazines, to musical geniuses. Honestly, till this day, I don't think I was ever into a band as much as I was into SlipKnot. There's just too much good music today.
Then, it was off to Intermediate where I met Joe Blahnik. At the time, he was a punk rock/music fanatic, y'know? He got me into Green Day. Again, I bought tees, I bought pretty much every single album from Green Day. He introduced me to so much great bands, & some still stick around in my iPod. The coolest thing was we got him into SlipKnot, too. Even Joe went out to buy SlipKnot Cds, & when we would meet up in the morning before class, we would just talk about music or talk about the new album we bought last night. It was crazy. From then on, I knew that music was always going to be a part of me now.
High School came along. We all had grown & matured, & surely we all had different tastes in music & we all had what we liked & didn't like. I know in high school, that's when I started to listen to anything & everything, just not so much Green Day & SlipKnot. I do listen to them from time to time, but it's just not the same, y'know. It's weird. But high school was pretty much the PRIME TIME in our lives, where we would just meet up at the "wall" & talk shit, or talk about music, skateboarding, chicks, whatever. One or two of us was almost guaranteed to be listening to an iPod. We would share the earphones & sing a long together, or we would just talk about the music. We still do that to this day. I'd say, one of the greatest albums that I'll never forget would be Stay What You Are by Saves The Day. That album will ALWAYS remind me of high school & what it was like. It will always remind me of Chayne Amaki, haha. Only because he gave me that album because I think he had an extra one at the time. We still talk about that album to this day, too. Another would be Perhaps, I Suppose by Rufio. This will always remind me of Taco Bell in Waipio & skating in Waipio. Thanks to Chayne Amaki once again. I think this next one, we'd all have to agree on. They're Only Chasing Safety by Underoath. That album would probably have to be one of the best things that happend to us in high school.
We also had a hip hop/rap phase in high school & for the most part, I think we all pretty much still listen to it, but it's just not as strong as it was before. Dr. Dre, Biggie, Wu-Tang, The Grouch, Murs, Jedi Mind, PUTS, Nujabes, the list can go on forever. They all will always remind me of good times & friends. But you know, I still have those days/nights where I put everything on the side & just listen to some good hip hop music or anything with a good beat. I remember back in high school, we admired Biggie with a passion & how some of his songs were more like a story or a life lesson. I'm pretty sure we still do think the same today.
Reggae. Today, we're all pretty much into reggae which is sick, man. Today, we're all so much more mature & we can understand this type of music. Like what Mattalatt said in his blog, we dig much deeper into the music now, & we want to understand things. To me, reggae is probably the first type of music that made me want to choose what kind of lifestyle I want to live by because I respect the culture it derives from. I'm not a rastaman, y'know, but I believe, respect, & admire the way they live & they're out look on life. Another thing I want to point out is that we all, as friends, had like the same types of music all at the same times. The reason for that is because we all introduce new artists to eachother & we all talked about the music/artists to eachother. It's still like that today & thats sick. I also got introduced to going to shows to see bands play live. That only added fuel to the fiya.
Music has brought so much people together & has opened my eyes to new things. Music has given me the chance to meet new people. Now days, music is the only thing that brings all of us together, too.
